Ingredients

4 cups all-purpose flour

1 packet (2 ¼ tsp) active dry yeast

½ cup granulated sugar

1 tsp salt

1 cup whole milk (warmed to about 110°F)

¼ cup unsalted butter (melted, plus 2 tbsp for brushing)

2 large eggs (lightly beaten)

2 medium apples (peeled, cored, and diced; Granny Smith or Honeycrisp recommended)

1 tsp ground cinnamon

1 tsp vanilla extract

¼ cup packed brown sugar

½ cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)

Instructions

Activate the Yeast: In a small bowl, combine the warmed milk, active dry yeast, and 1 teaspoon of the granulated sugar. Stir gently, then let it sit for about 5 to 10 minutes until it becomes frothy on the surface. This indicates that the yeast is active.

Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, remaining granulated sugar, and salt until well combined.

Combine Mixtures: Create a well in the center of the flour mixture. Pour in the yeast mixture, melted butter, beaten eggs, and vanilla extract. Stir with a wooden spoon until the ingredients start to come together to form a rough dough.

Knead the Dough: Transfer the dough to a floured surface. Knead the dough for about 5 to 7 minutes until it is smooth and elastic. Lightly grease a large bowl, place the dough inside, cover it with a damp cloth, and set it in a warm place to rise for approximately 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.

Prepare the Apple Filling: In a separate bowl, mix the diced apples with brown sugar and ground cinnamon. If you are using nuts, add them to the apple mixture and stir until everything is evenly coated.

Divide & Shape the Dough: Once the dough has risen, gently punch it down to release the air. Turn it out onto a floured surface and divide it into 16 equal pieces. Flatten each piece into a small disc shape.

Fill the Dough: Take one disc of dough and place a generous spoonful of the apple filling in the center. Fold the edges over the filling to seal it, gently shaping it into a ball. Set aside and repeat this process with the remaining dough pieces.

Assemble the Pull-Apart Bread: Grease a standard loaf pan with butter or cooking spray. Stack the filled dough balls vertically in the pan, arranging them closely together. Once all the balls are in the pan, brush the top with melted butter for added flavor and shine.

Second Rise: Cover the loaf pan with a cloth and allow it to rise for another 30 to 45 minutes, or until the dough balls are slightly puffy.

Preheat the Oven: During the last 10 to 15 minutes of the second rise, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) to ensure it is hot when the dough is ready.

Bake: Place the loaf pan in the preheated oven and bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until the top is a rich golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped lightly.

Cool & Serve: After baking, let the bread cool in the pan for about 10 minutes. Carefully remove it from the pan and place it on a wire rack to cool slightly. Serve warm, inviting everyone to pull apart their own delightful pieces.
