Ingredients

8 cups cubed day-old bread (French or sourdough work best)

2 cups cooked and diced ham

3 cups shredded cheddar cheese (divided)

2 cups diced potatoes (frozen hash browns are a convenient alternative)

6 large eggs

2 cups milk

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon onion powder

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

1 teaspoon Dijon mustard

2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh parsley (for garnish)

Optional: Hot sauce for serving

Instructions

Prep the Dish: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 9x13 inch baking dish with butter or non-stick spray for easy release.

Layer the Bread: In the greased baking dish, spread half of the cubed bread evenly to form the base layer.

Add Ham and Cheese: Sprinkle half of the diced ham over the bread layer, followed by 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese, ensuring it's evenly distributed.

Layer the Potatoes: Evenly sprinkle the diced potatoes (or frozen hash browns) on top of the ham and cheese layer for added texture.

Second Bread Layer: Place the remaining bread cubes over the potatoes to create a second layer. Top with the rest of the diced ham and another cup of shredded cheddar cheese.

Prepare the Egg Mixture: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, and Dijon mustard until fully combined and smooth.

Combine & Soak: Carefully pour the egg mixture evenly over the layered strata. Gently press down on the bread with a spatula to ensure it absorbs the liquid. Cover the dish with plastic wrap and allow it to sit for at least 30 minutes. For the best flavor and texture, refrigerate overnight.

Bake the Strata: After soaking, remove the plastic wrap and sprinkle the final cup of shredded cheddar cheese on top. Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 45-55 minutes, or until the strata is nicely puffed and golden brown on top. A knife inserted into the center should come out clean.

Garnish and Serve: Let the strata cool for about 10 minutes before slicing into squares. Garnish with chopped parsley for a fresh touch, and serve with hot sauce on the side if you enjoy a spicy kick!

                    Prep Time: 20 minutes | Total Time: 1 hour 15 minutes | Servings: 8

Presentation Tips: For an appealing presentation, serve the strata on a large platter, garnished with additional fresh parsley, and arrange small bowls of hot sauce and any other condiments nearby.
