Ingredients

12 lasagna noodles

1 pound ground beef

1 pound Italian sausage (casings removed)

1 medium onion, diced

3 cloves garlic, minced

28 oz can crushed tomatoes

6 oz tomato paste

2 tbsp fresh basil, chopped (or 2 tsp dried basil)

1 tsp dried oregano

Salt and pepper to taste

15 oz ricotta cheese

1 egg

2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

3/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Set your oven temperature to 375°F (190°C) so it’s ready when you assemble the lasagna.

Cook the Noodles: In a large pot filled with boiling salted water, cook the lasagna noodles according to the package instructions until they are al dente. Once cooked, drain the noodles and lay them flat on parchment paper to prevent them from sticking together.

Prepare the Meat Sauce: Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add the ground beef, Italian sausage, diced onion, and minced garlic. Cook the mixture for about 7-10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the meat is browned and the onions are soft and translucent. Carefully drain any excess fat from the skillet.

Add Tomatoes and Herbs: Into the skillet with the cooked meat, stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, chopped basil, oregano, and season with salt and pepper. Mix everything well and let it simmer for approximately 15 minutes. This will allow the flavors to blend beautifully.

Prepare the Cheese Mixture: In a mixing bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, egg, half of the grated Parmesan cheese, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Stir the mixture until it’s completely smooth and creamy.

Layer the Lasagna: In a 9x13 inch baking dish, start by spreading a thin layer of the meat sauce on the bottom. Place 4 lasagna noodles on top of the sauce. Next, spread one-third of the ricotta mixture over the noodles, followed by one-fourth of the meat sauce. Sprinkle one-third of the mozzarella cheese on top. Repeat this layering process two more times. For the final layer, add the remaining meat sauce and then top with the remaining mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses.

Bake the Lasagna: Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil to prevent sticking (to ensure the foil doesn’t cling, lightly spray it with cooking spray). Place the lasagna in the preheated oven and bake for 25 minutes. After that, remove the foil and continue baking for an additional 25 minutes or until the cheese is bubbling and golden brown.

Let it Rest: Once baked, take the lasagna out of the oven and allow it to cool for about 15 minutes. This resting period is crucial for the layers to set, making it easier to slice and serve.

Serve: To finish, garnish with freshly chopped parsley and serve hot. Pair your homemade lasagna with a side salad and some garlic bread for a delightful meal!
