Ingredients

For the Meatballs:

1 lb ground beef (80/20 blend)

1/2 lb ground pork

1/2 cup Italian-seasoned breadcrumbs

1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped (or 2 tablespoons dried parsley)

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 large egg

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

1/2 teaspoon Italian seasoning

For the Marinara Sauce:

2 cups canned crushed tomatoes (or tomato sauce)

1 clove garlic, minced

1 small onion, finely chopped

1 teaspoon olive oil

1 teaspoon sugar (to balance acidity)

1/2 teaspoon dried basil

1/2 teaspoon dried oregano

Salt and pepper to taste

Other Ingredients:

4 hoagie rolls

1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

Fresh basil leaves for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Prepare the Meatballs:

In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, ground pork, breadcrumbs, grated Parmesan cheese, chopped parsley, minced garlic, egg, salt, black pepper, and Italian seasoning. Mix everything gently until just combined; be careful not to over-mix. Shape the mixture into 12 evenly sized meatballs.

      Cook the Meatballs:

Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Arrange the meatballs on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, ensuring they are spaced apart. Bake for approximately 20-25 minutes, or until they are fully cooked and nicely browned.

          Make the Marinara Sauce:

While the meatballs are baking, heat olive oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onion and minced garlic, and sauté until the onion becomes translucent, about 2-3 minutes. Stir in the crushed tomatoes, sugar, dried basil, and dried oregano. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Allow the sauce to simmer on low heat for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally to blend the flavors.

              Combine Meatballs and Sauce:

Once the meatballs are cooked, carefully transfer them into the marinara sauce, ensuring they are well-coated. Let them simmer together for an additional 5-10 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.

                  Assemble the Subs:

Preheat your broiler on low. Slice the hoagie rolls open and lightly toast them under the broiler for about 2 minutes, until they are golden brown. Spoon a generous amount of the meatballs and marinara sauce into each toasted hoagie roll, then top with shredded mozzarella cheese.

                      Melt the Cheese:

Return the assembled subs to the broiler for another 2-3 minutes, or until the mozzarella is melted and bubbly. Keep a close eye on them to prevent burning.

                          Serve:

Carefully remove the subs from the oven and let them cool slightly before serving. Garnish with fresh basil leaves if desired. Serve hot and savor the delightful flavors of your homemade meatball subs!
